Breathing new life into a Protected Structure

This project is for the complete refurbishment and extension of a large protected house with a beautiful, deep West facing rear garden. A new single storey rear extension containing kitchen utility and family areas are connected to the rear of the existing house, slipping under the two storey rear return. This creates a necklace of connected living rooms from the front of the main house to the back of the new extension, slipping in plan to create a courtyard at the rear elevation to the existing house. The new extension is conceived as a punched, cranked roof plane supported between two brick flank walls. Permeability and connectivity of these spaces to the gardens and courtyard through sliding/ folding doors allows casual enjoyment.
